World Memon Organization, which represents
the two million strong communities worldwide, will soon establish an internal
university in Dubai to help students from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, besides
the UAE to acquire internationally recognized degrees while staying closer to
home.
The proposed university would be called World Memon University.
The announcement was made at the 7th Annual General Meeting of the World Memon
Organization (WMO), a humanitarian group that focuses on the betterment of the
poor and the underprivileged around the world. The three-day event, started in
Dubai on Sunday, facilitates and institutions that comprise the organization meet
to review their previous projects and discuss future undertaking.
With the capacity to accommodate more than 5,000 students whose pursuit for
quality education are hindered by poverty, the university will offer full academic
programmes in the areas of Accountancy, Agriculture, Engineering, Biological Science,
Computer Science, Costume and Fashion Technology, Home Science, Management, Mass
Media and Healthcare.
As an organization comprised of institutions operating within diverse industries,
the WMO announced that its members have also pledged their academic inputs as
industry experts to impart knowledge to the future students. Initial work on the
university is set to commence in 2010 with state-of-the-art facilities.
"As one of the most rapidly growing economies in the region and home to
a strong Memon community, hope this progressive emirate will welcome our most
ambitious project to date, the World Memon University," said Haji Abdul Razzak
Yaqoob, WMO president and chairman of ARY Group.

Al Nahyan said that the UAE has placed great emphasis on the full development
of human potential and has invested a good ideal of resources in the education
system
"I congratulate the WMO on the World Memon University and look forward
to welcome the university into the education environment in the United Arab Emirates,"
he said.
Mohammed Tofique Amdani, chairman of the organizing committee, said that half
of the seats will be reserved for the students from the community who will get
scholarship well, while the remaining half will be open for students from outside
the community.
He pointed out that the community has set aside a budget of Dhs100 million
to start the project. The building construction is expected to start by 2010 and
classes will commence by 2013. "We aim to start with a course in business
management," he said.
"We felt that students from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka cannot afford
to go to the US and European countries for higher education. Thus we decided to
wet up a world class university in the UAE which would allow students acquire
an internationally recognized degree while home, said Abu Baker Shaikhani a WMO
Trustee.
The organization has also allocated $5 million for the expansion of its charity,
healthcare and education networks across the seven chapters of the WMO worldwide.

A Dh100-million World Memon University
(WMU) is set to be built in the UAE, the World MWmon Organisation (WMO) announced
yesterday.
Construction on the WMU, which aims to accommodate 5,000 students, will commnce
in 2010 and be operational by 2013. The WMO, a humanitarian group that assists
the poor and underpriviledged across the globe, made the annoumcement at its seventh
annual general meeting in Dubai.
Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific
Research, inaugurated the three-day event themed "WMO Vision 2008, Dubai"
where the organization is reviewing its future projects. WMO President Haji Abdul
Razzak Yaqoob said: "As one of the most rapidly growing economies in the
region and home to a strong Memon community, we have decided to hold WMO Vision
2008, Dubai".
WMU will offer full academic programmes in accountancy, agriculturem enginerring,
biological sciences, computer sciences, costume fashion technology, home science,
management, mass media and health care.
The university would either be located in Dubai, Ras Al Kahimah or Abu Dhabi
and was currently cnducting feasibility studies.

Speaking at the opening Sheikh Nahyan said, "The UAE has placed great

of resources in the education system. I congratulate the WMO on the "World
Memon University and look forward to welcoming the university into the education
environment in the United Arab Emirates."
Abubaker Shaikhani, chairman of Memon Group ans member of WMO, said that the
university was planned to be fully opened in 2013.
He, however added that the location was undecided. "The university will
give preference to students from the community and others in general. For those
who are unable to pay for their education, the WMO will offer their support,"
he added.

Plans to build a Dh100 million (US$27.2m)
university to help educate the poorest members of a Muslim sect have been unveiled.
The World Memon University could accept its first students in two and half
years, officials from the World Memon Organization (WMO) announced yesterday at
their seventh general meeting.
Memons are Sunnil Muslims who originate from the Indian subcontinent and have
a common language which is a version of Sindhi. There are an estimated two million
around he world. Mohammas Toufique Amdani. The chairman of the orgnizing committee
of the WMO Vison 2008 conference in Dubai, said 50 persent of places would be
reserved for Memons.
The focus would be on educating Memons from poor backgrounds, 8,000 of whom
the WMO helped to send to other universities. '"Rather than giving them cash,
we like to give people from our community an education and to help them, "
Mr. Amdani said. "They should stand on their own two feet."
Mr. Amdani said the WMO was looking for a suitable site in Dubai, Abu Dhabi
and Ras Al Kahimah and tha fund-raising for the project had already started.
The UAE was chosen as a location for the university, he said, because of its
"easy access" for Indians and Pakistanis, who will make up a large propertion
of the coeducational institution's student body.
"We will open in the next two to two ans half years and we can then expand.
I am really excited," Mr. Amdani said.
Subjects to be taught include accountancy, agriculture, engineering, biologay,
computer science, costume and fashion technology, home science, management, mass
media and health care.
The WMO which was founded in 2001 ans is based in Dubai Aid and Humanitarian
City, has helped to build more than 1,800 housing units for the underpriviledge
in Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.
